How CROS solves single sided hearing
CROS is for one specific problem: one ear that cannot be helped by amplification, and one that hears reasonably well. A hearing aid in the poor ear would achieve nothing, because that ear cannot use the sound.
Instead, a CROS transmitter is worn on the unaidable side. It has microphones but no speaker. It picks up whatever happens on that side and sends it wirelessly to a hearing aid on your good ear, so conversation from your deaf side stops disappearing. BiCROS is the same idea when the better ear also needs help: that side gets a full hearing aid and receives the transmitted sound as well.
What CROS does not do is restore stereo hearing or the ability to tell where a sound came from. That needs two working ears. What it does is stop you missing the person seated on your bad side, which is usually the thing that was actually costing you.
